Job description

A growing Christchurch flooring business is hiring carpet and flooring installers, from experienced seniors to complete beginners.

The job is Carpet & Flooring Installer in Christchurch, New Zealand. Pay is $25 - $38 per hour. It is permanent and full-time, with at least 37.5 hours a week, usually 40 to 42, mainly Monday to Friday plus occasional extra hours.

Work is residential and light commercial around Christchurch and the surrounding area. Seniors run jobs start to finish and lead a second installer or small crew. Juniors, apprentices and trainees learn on the job next to experienced installers. More than one person may be hired.

Key responsibilities

  • Check job details, materials, quantities and install requirements before starting.
  • Measure, set out, cut and fit floors accurately.
  • Lay carpet, underlay, trims and accessories; do sheet vinyl and vinyl plank when trained and competent.
  • Lift and dispose of old flooring, then prep by smoothing, grinding and levelling as needed.
  • Report access, prep, scheduling or site-condition problems.
  • Hit quality standards and leave finished jobs clean and tidy.
  • Talk professionally with customers, builders, site managers and suppliers, and fill in timesheets and job records accurately.
  • Load, unload and move gear safely, look after tools and follow health and safety rules.

Requirements

  • Reliable, punctual and proud of your work.
  • Good communicator, professional with customers and productive in a team.
  • Happy to follow instructions, learn and improve; fit to handle flooring materials safely and do the physical work.
  • Seniors hold a full driver licence. Juniors and trainees: a licence is preferred and reliable transport to the agreed meeting point is essential.
  • Seniors also bring strong carpet installation skills, run jobs independently and can confidently organise and support another installer or a small crew. Sheet vinyl and vinyl plank experience is highly valued.
  • Trainees: previous flooring experience not required. Reliability, willingness to learn, practical interest and a good work attitude are essential.
