Job description

Two Commis Chef roles are open at a hotel bar and restaurant in Queenstown, New Zealand.

The basics first. Pay is $28 - $29 per hour. Both roles are permanent at 30 hours a week. Shifts include late nights, weekends and public holidays. The kitchen serves hearty, rustic food, breakfast items and conference food.

You need experience in a similar position, à la carte know-how and an NZQCF Diploma, or at least three years of relevant experience instead. A safe food handling certificate helps but is not essential. The employer can potentially offer visa sponsorship for the right candidate.

Key responsibilities

  • Cook and present breakfast items, conference food and other dishes
  • Plate food and sides correctly
  • Use only high-quality produce and make sure guests always get a quality product
  • Meet dairy-free, gluten-free and other dietary needs
  • Follow hygiene, health and safety and HACCP procedures
  • Use cooking appliances and tools correctly
  • Look after supplies and equipment and cut waste
  • Help with washing up, freezing and preserving foods and other kitchen duties
  • Help train and recruit staff when required

Requirements

  • Prior experience in a similar position, including an à la carte menu
  • NZQCF Diploma, or at least three years of relevant experience in place of the formal qualification (a mix may be suitable)
  • Can work late nights, weekends and public holidays
  • Can work 30 hours a week on a permanent contract
  • Strong team player who fits a tight-knit team
  • Safe food handling certification is an advantage but not required
