Job description

A hands-on opportunity is available for an Electrician or Junior Electrician in New South Wales to develop a career within the standby power and critical electrical systems sector. Rather than focusing only on general electrical work, this position gives you exposure to the systems that keep commercial buildings operational when normal power is unavailable. You’ll work with standby generators, control panels, PLCs, transfer systems and associated switchgear while building on the practical skills you already have. Candidates with a genuine, verifiable trade background and a practical approach to electrical problem-solving are encouraged to apply. The role also provides ongoing exposure to engineering support, complex projects and opportunities to broaden your technical knowledge.

Key responsibilities

  • Maintain and service electrical systems connected to standby diesel generators
  • Complete electrical installation and upgrade work on generator systems
  • Perform emergency power and generator testing during commercial building shutdowns
  • Assist with AFSS generator testing and related electrical requirements
  • Investigate faults across generator controllers, PLCs and control circuits
  • Test and diagnose Automatic Transfer Switches and associated switchgear
  • Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and single-line diagrams
  • Carry out control-system wiring, testing and troubleshooting
  • Assist with generator commissioning and system modifications
  • Identify technical problems and apply practical fault-finding methods
  • Work independently across assigned commercial sites
  • Collaborate with electricians and engineering personnel on specialist projects
  • Support telemetry and generator control-system activities
  • Complete scheduled night and weekend testing when required
  • Undertake additional shutdown and overtime work as opportunities arise

Requirements

  • Current NSW Electrical Licence is essential
  • Demonstrated electrical trade experience with a verifiable employment background
  • Strong practical understanding of electrical systems and equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics and single-line diagrams
  • Confident and competent using electrical and trade tools
  • Practical approach to troubleshooting and fault diagnosis
  • Ability to work independently and take responsibility for assigned tasks
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively within a small team
  • Experience with Deep Sea, Cummins, CAT or Woodward generator controllers is advantageous
  • Interest in PLCs, generator controls, telemetry and control-system wiring
  • Must reside in Sydney or be willing to relocate
  • Full NSW Driver Licence required
  • Ability to operate a manual vehicle
  • Willingness to undertake occasional night and weekend work
