Job description

A production business in Otago, New Zealand is seeking an experienced Machine Operator who can demonstrate real-world ability with production equipment and a practical understanding of how machinery should perform. This is a role for someone who does more than simply operate a machine. You will be expected to understand equipment settings, recognise performance issues, respond to faults and help maintain a reliable production process. As the packaging operation continues to introduce automation and new equipment, your existing experience can become the foundation for developing more advanced technical capability. The role provides exposure to machine optimisation, commissioning and production improvement.

Key responsibilities

  • Operate packaging and production machinery safely and efficiently
  • Complete equipment setup and prepare machinery for production
  • Carry out changeovers and adjust machinery for different production requirements
  • Monitor machine performance throughout production runs
  • Identify unusual equipment behaviour and production interruptions
  • Troubleshoot machinery faults and implement appropriate adjustments
  • Perform routine equipment cleaning, lubrication and basic maintenance
  • Monitor production output and finished-product quality
  • Maintain required production, equipment and inventory records
  • Follow food safety, quality and workplace health and safety procedures
  • Assist with packaging, kegging, warehousing and product handling
  • Support installation and commissioning of new machinery
  • Work with automated equipment as new technology is introduced
  • Assist with testing and fine-tuning machinery for improved performance
  • Identify recurring equipment issues and suggest practical improvements
  • Help minimise downtime and maintain consistent production flow
  • Take responsibility for the condition and performance of assigned machinery

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant machine operating or manufacturing experience
  • Proven experience operating production or industrial machinery
  • Previous Machine Operator, Production Operator or comparable experience
  • Strong practical understanding of machinery and mechanical systems
  • Demonstrated ability to set up and adjust production equipment
  • Ability to diagnose and respond to machine faults
  • Basic mechanical maintenance and equipment-care experience
  • Strong awareness of workplace safety and production quality
  • Ability to monitor equipment carefully and identify performance changes
  • Practical and hands-on approach to problem solving
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of equipment
  • Interest in automation and developing technical machinery skills
  • Packaging, canning, bottling, food or beverage production experience is advantageous
  • Ability to provide verifiable evidence of relevant employment and machine-operating experience
  • Willingness to relocate to Otago and contribute to a long-term production team
