Fitter Welder

Accredited Employer · Christchurch Central, Canterbury · Full-time

Job description

A permanent Fitter-Welder opportunity is available with an established engineering business in Canterbury, New Zealand, offering experienced tradespeople the chance to apply their fabrication skills in a diverse, hands-on workshop. The ideal candidate is someone who has developed genuine trade capability through years of practical work and can demonstrate that experience through a credible employment and skills history. You’ll be expected to do more than weld components together—you’ll need to understand fabrication requirements, achieve accurate fit-up, interpret drawings where available and use sound judgement to overcome challenges on the workshop floor. The projects are varied and practical, covering custom truck decks, crane fit-outs, trailers, transport repairs and general engineering. If you enjoy working on different builds rather than repeating the same task every day, this role offers plenty of variety.

Requirements

  • • Fabricate and fit custom truck decks and related transport structures
  • • Carry out crane fit-out and structural fabrication work
  • • Perform MIG and TIG welding across mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium
  • • Complete accurate component preparation, fabrication and fit-up
  • • Measure, mark, cut and prepare materials for fabrication
  • • Read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications
  • • Translate project requirements into practical workshop solutions
  • • Complete fitting, assembly and finishing of fabricated components
  • • Undertake truck, transport and general engineering repairs
  • • Manage urgent repair and fabrication jobs within required timeframes
  • • Identify fabrication issues and resolve them using practical trade knowledge
  • • Inspect finished work for accuracy, alignment, quality and presentation
  • • Work to required engineering, safety and certification standards
  • • Coordinate with qualified engineers during inspection and certification processes
  • • Maintain tools, machinery and the workshop area to a professional standard
