Job description

A verified engineering and metal fabrication opportunity is available in Papakura, Auckland for an experienced Fitter & CNC Machine Operator with broad workshop capability. The role is suited to a reliable tradesperson who can contribute across CNC machining, fitting, fabrication, assembly and job preparation. You will work from engineering drawings, understand production requirements and ensure fabricated components are completed accurately and prepared for installation. This is a hands-on position for someone who can take practical responsibility, manage work independently and contribute across different stages of production rather than being limited to a single machine or task.

Key responsibilities

  • Study and interpret engineering and fabrication drawings
  • Plan fabrication and assembly work according to job requirements
  • Operate CNC and general workshop machinery
  • Complete fitting and assembly work accurately
  • Carry out required fabrication tasks
  • Perform basic MIG and TIG welding
  • Measure and inspect work throughout the production process
  • Check completed items against drawings before release
  • Prepare materials and fabricated components for installation
  • Organise workshop jobs and daily priorities
  • Ensure installation teams receive the correct prepared items
  • Maintain workshop machinery, tools and equipment
  • Identify production or drawing issues early
  • Resolve or report technical problems appropriately
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment
  • Work closely with workshop and installation teams
  • Assist with site installation and fitting work when required

Requirements

  • Previous experience in a similar engineering or metal fabrication workshop role
  • Experience operating CNC machinery
  • Strong ability to read and understand engineering drawings
  • Excellent fitting and assembly skills
  • Broad understanding of fabrication processes
  • Basic MIG and TIG welding ability
  • Strong measuring and quality-checking skills
  • Experience with workshop tools and fabrication equipment
  • Ability to independently complete jobs from drawing through to final preparation
  • Strong reliability and sense of responsibility
  • Good organisational and time-management skills
  • Practical problem-solving skills
  • Commitment to safe working practices
  • Ability to work effectively with tradespeople and installation teams
  • Experience with CNC laser cutting, tube laser cutting, CNC press brakes, drilling and grinding will be highly regarded
  • Immediate availability or availability to start at short notice
